This past June, I was extremely exited about visiting my motherland, Mongolia.
It felt like my mind had already traveled to my hometown of Ulaanbaatar, before my body did. I had dreams that I was conversing with the people whom I had never seen or met before. Oh I know... what a fantasy! Or was it deja vu? One of the people I dreamed about meeting was GRANDMASTER (GM), the S.M.O.K brands' creative director Ankhbayr (Anhaa) Sept.
A little bit about the GM brand - they disrupted an already crowded fashion market in Mongolia, but not through social media as an internet sensation or with technological innovations, but with a new ideology. What made the brand truly innovative and influential was the intention behind the design. There was a lot of thought put into this inclusive yet classically designed unisex street wear that anyone can don; but with authentic Mongolian culture and history surrounding elements. The GM Mongolian brand has it's own orbit. It includes a Biennale awarded artist, rock musicians, sound artists, talented photographers and the game changer himself, Anhaa. At GM, they sincerely believe that humans and mother nature have a deep rooted relationship; thus a real work of art has it's own spirit inside. They translate this philosophy into GM apparel in Mongolia.
Then, my Mongolia fashion dream came true.
...To get out of the rain I zipped open one door and yanked another to get into the GM store. At first glance, I noticed a calm masculine smell and chill music playing in the background, making me feel welcomed. Then a hypnotic, blood red sculpture that was on the left side of wall greeted me before a shopping assistant did. The way the clothes were hanging on the rack, well blended and organized by color and size and arranged neatly inside each display... it was pleasing to my eyes and overall, oddly satisfying. In this specific Mongolian fashion store, there were sandy gray cargo pants adorned with a wide long belt, which commanded attention from the rear part of the store. While I was adoring every single detail and imagining how to style the pants, all of a sudden, Anhaa walked in. He was wearing a black wind breaker which was covering his face with a hoodie (I could barely see his nose and mouth). I noticed he had a calm voice and was more of a quiet kind of person. I felt nervous at first, thinking about how I should approach this seemingly quiet personality to try and propose a collaboration. Gulp...
We settled in his office at a coffee table facing each other with bottles of water and started talking about the Alchemy Annual party which GM recently hosted in Mongolia. Discussing the mind blowing performances and artists first, it morphed our conversation's topic to Portland's (PDX) fascinating events in the US. I remember mentioning the PDX skateboarding competition, a very interesting show indeed. The contestants from the PDX skateboarding competition perform tricks on the back of Cadillac automobile which is actually the grand prize. At the end of the competition, as you can imagine, the paint on the Cadillac was super scratched and it's body was bent and morphed.
Winning is important, but how to win is more important!
I sensed that we were clicking by his giggling and by the comments he made from my story. In the middle of our conversation, someone called him upstairs and he wanted to take a cigarette break. "Sure, go right ahead," I said. I wandered around his office freely while he was away. Under the coffee table I found film, poetry, and philosophy books. I picked up a poetry book, bent it over, let the all pages go, then read a few lines briefly, and then I smelled the book unconsciously. I love the way a book smells. With me being present, Migos - Narcos was playing in the background, and my head and hands were feeling the beats and moving all by themselves. The atmosphere consisting of background music, books, and the conversation itself, it made me so sure that I was in the right place at the right time and doing the right thing.
Natural responses, natural progression - and we continued.
I excitedly asked about the cargo pants I fell in love with earlier in the showroom. He calmly asked if I wanted to create some fashion content with those pants, I was free to take them. (Oh my god! Yasss!!!) I asked, "is there anything that GM specifically requires of their content?" He replied,"I believe you can do any creative content styling that fits your vibe," without elaborating. The first photographer who came into mind was a talented Mongolian named Chayodu. Anhaa agreed that our aesthetic might work well together. I appreciated the creative freedom he gave me...

I definitely wanted to infuse Mongolian identity within this photo set. Although we live in modern day society, we still have a story to tell to the world and culture to remember while nomadic lifestyle still exist, in the least bits. Something about it is very Mongolian yet you can still see the creative collaboration of GM, the photographer and myself, Mindofamongol.
Chayodu and I picked a location outside of the city, a local herder's winter place (uvuljuu translates hibernating spot). The reasoning goes that in a harsh Mongolian winter, herders move with their animals (i.e. sheep, goats, cows, horses) to the leeward side of the mountain. Because the leeward side, or "lee" side, is the side sheltered from the wind by the mountain's own elevation and typically has a dry, warm climate. Pretty cool huh!?
Well, all that magic has to come from some kind of inspiration, right? Whether it's from traditional clothes, from nature, an abstract concept, or a film, inspiration is all around us. Fast forward, two months after this collaboration while I was beginning to write this blog post, out of curiosity I asked Anhaa about the cargo pants. What made him design it? He unhesitatingly texted back a very long and informative message about his inspiration and insight. He pretty much solved his personal problems while pursuing authenticity with his inspiration, experience and practice.
I poorly translated his text:
"Mongolians wear their traditional belt which consists of a wide and long silk fabric, double wrapped on their torso to protect their back and organs while riding a horse in the countryside as part of their day to the day activities. I used to wear a support belt for my back pain and noticed my posture got better. Having great posture is core for overall good health. That's why I attached a Mongolian traditional style belt. The pants were inspired by the mountains and from being outdoors in nature. There is a scene in the movie called "Seven Years in Tibet," where the hikers' pants were wrapped and tied up at the bottom. I liked the practical part about it since they won't get caught onto the surroundings, plus dirt and insects can't get in. That's why it has tight and long cuffs. Also, the cuffs are very helpful for wearing boots. The pockets are convenient. Lots of pockets... if you put all the pockets together, the volume and size can create one big bag. I don't like to wear long johns myself. The tight feeling annoys me. So I added thermal lining so that even in -30 C weather conditions, your legs will still be warm. The design was a challenge for our seamstresses. They said, 'what crazy idea you have this time?' There was a cashmere sweatshirt I had made for those specific pants. If you have this set, you're set for life. You can climb Mt. Everest."
Holy cow! These compelling ideas were running inside Anhaa's mind which he then transformed through his GM apparel line.
I'm so thankful for his acceptance, kindness and time! Chayodu and Anhaa came to my farewell gathering when I left Ulaanbaatar. We were all seated outside, surrounded by my longtime friends drinking wine, having meaningful conversations, listening to good music and feeling the rain drops. It was definitely my kind of night for a fantastic farewell. This entire experience which I just shared with you above, here on my blog, deeply connected me to my roots and to my motherland in a very powerful way.
